In a heartfelt address, the Honorable Premier of KZN, Thami Ntuli, acknowledged every nominee as a “winner” for their relentless efforts and unwavering passion. “Everyone here is a winner,” Ntuli remarked, commending each athlete’s commitment to not only personal excellence but also elevating KwaZulu-Natal’s prominence in the national sports arena.

This year’s awards shone brightly on netball, with KZN Netball Federation celebrating six nominations—an impressive milestone that reflects the federation’s determination to grow the sport in the province. Netball took the spotlight, with three major awards celebrating the federation’s impact, solidifying its reputation as a leading force in KwaZulu-Natal’s sports landscape.
Despite a competitive lineup, the coveted Sportswoman of the Year award went to Proteas Women’s star Nonkululeko Mlaba. Nozipho Ntshangase, a finalist in the same category, put up a commendable performance, highlighting her skill and dedication. Federation President Gugu Ngema may not have won her category, but the night was a triumph for KZN Netball, whose three wins out of six nominations speak volumes about the federation’s growth and ambition.

Coach of the Year: Precious Mthembu
Beloved coach of the Kingdom Stars, Precious Mthembu, accepted the Coach of the Year award to resounding applause. Her tactical insight and inspiring leadership have earned her immense respect within KZN netball, propelling her team to new heights. Mthembu’s award solidifies her legacy as one of KZN’s most influential netball coaches.
School Team of the Year: Khombindlela High School Netball Team
The Khombindlela High School Netball Team proudly received the School Team of the Year award, celebrated for their teamwork, skill, and commitment to grassroots netball in KZN. This talented team has made a lasting impact on youth sports, nurturing future stars with dreams of competing at the highest levels.

As the event drew to a close, Premier Ntuli issued a powerful call to action, urging the private sector to invest even more in sports, arts, and culture. “The South African sports industry contributes around R60 billion annually to the economy,” Ntuli stated. “This is a vital part of our country’s growth.”
Adding to the Premier’s call, Honorable Mntomuhle Khawula, MEC for Sport, Arts, and Culture, expressed gratitude and determination: “As the Department, we are very happy and are committed to growing this even further each year.”
