The six clubs Ziphozonke (King Cetshwayo), Happy Club ( Ethekwini), Ocean Predators ( Ethekwini), Edumbe Thunderbirds ( Zululand), PMB Giants ( Umgungundlovu) and Umhlathuze Sharks (King Cetshwayo) revived the League in 2015. The League was joined by Female Section as from 2017 with 16 clubs. In 2018 Male Clubs increased to nine (9) and females increased to 24. In 2019 Males increased to 10 and females increased to 30. In 2020 the Males have increased to 12 and female teams are now 32. There are two sections for Males and three sections for Females.

There are too many other players who are produced by the Super League who are playing in the Junior SA Teams. All Kingdom Stars players are playing in the Super League. The Super League has produced the first Black African Coach to coach the Kingdom Stars for the first time in 2019 & 2020. This is in line with the National Eminent Persons Group (EPG) requirements.

In the Male Section the Super League has helped KZN to win all gold medals from 2015 up to now. In 2017 in Paarl ( Western Cape) and in 2018 at Hoy Park in Durban the KZN Male Teams won all medals from gold, silver and bronze defeating all other Provinces from South Africa. This has resulted to Arthur Maseko ( Coach of PMB Giants) being appointed by Netball South Africa to be National Coach for Males, and Siyabonga Khuzwayo of Ocean Predators being appointed as Head Coach for National U23 Team for Males.

In Umpiring Nkululenko Khumalo has received a SA A Grading and is now one of the Umpires who umpired for the Brutal Fruit National Netball Premier League in 2018 and Telkom Netball League in 2019 & 2020. In 2018 Five Umpires who officiate in the Super League received National B Grading, the first of its kind in a single year. THE FORMAT

Format of the League

The league is composed of two divisions (males) and three divisions (females). Each division play on a round robin bases, at least twice a year. The matches are MAINLY played on two venues where all clubs assemble at least once a month. These venues are Hoy Park in Durban and Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay. Clubs from all over the Province converge on each venue as per the scheduled fixtures. The winners per the division are thus given prize money, trophies and medals. The top three clubs in each division get monitory incentives, thanks to our sponsor Raminet Technologics.

The Grand Finale

This is the new innovation of the Super League which started in 2018. The top four teams in both Male and Females A Sections qualify for this Grand Finale. They play semi – finals on the first day and the losers finals and finals on the second day. This is the most interesting innovation which is played at the indoor venue at a packed arena. Unfortunately Covid 19 denied us the chance to have it played at the packed arena, but the interest came from all over the country, including the Assistant Protea Coach, Dumisani Chauke, who even made a commitment to sponsor an individual award. The Grand Finale is currently without a sponsor but we have used Raminet Technologics money to provide incentives as well.

SUPER LEAGUE PLANS FOR 2021 & BEYOND

As from 2020 the Super League officially became the full programme of KZN Netball. Obviously you don’t create such a huge project and just hand it over on a plate. I am happy that the President did mention the issue of royalties in her address. Super League is growing very fast and the sponsors are ready to be on board now. The issue of Covid 19 has made us to establish new venues where Super League matches will be played. Victoria Mxenge Indoor Sports Centre and KwaMsane Sports Centre are the two venues that currently meet the requirements of the Super League, and as such, we shall be using them alternatively. More matches will be played at KwaMsane because of the number of courts available (3 + 1). We are expecting maximum 47 clubs in 2021 season, that is, 32 female clubs and maximum 15 males (7 + 8). Only 16 clubs can play on one day at KwaMsane and only 8 can play at Umlazi at a time. These details will be explained at the meeting of the Super League Clubs to be held early in February 2021.
