The KwaZulu-Natal Netball Federation, in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government have officially announced the inaugural KZN Premier’s Netball Cup which is set to be staged at Victoria Mxenge Indoor Complex, Umlazi, from 5-9 March 2025
The KZN Premier’s Netball Cup media launch and draw took place at Durban’s Coastlands Hotel Musgrave on Sunday, 02/03/25, where dignitaries led by KZN Premier, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mntomuhle Khawula, KZN Sports Confederation, netball officials, district representatives, and key stakeholders gathered to celebrate this historic moment.
Launching the inaugural prestigious tournament, Premier Ntuli applauded the Netball federation for putting together this tournament that is set to contribute to netball development in the Province.
“This is a competition for girls and young women between the ages of 16-36 years of age, who are part of our basic building blocks for the future development of netball in KwaZulu-Natal.Out of today’s launch we inaugurate a competition that is to be played this month, in which the people of KwaZulu-Natal will witness the fierce battle for dominance and victory between the chosen few and the most talented among the women of our province. We look forward to being at the touchlines of this magical, graceful, yet fast-paced sport that is modern netball. We look forward to being part of this history from which new opportunities will be created that will catapult the girls and young women into national and possibly international spotlight,” he said.
Premier Ntuli also pledged his government’s support for the development of netball, calling for greater collaboration with the private sector to mobilise more resources towards sport development.
He added that the Provincial Government has identified sport as the vehicle to be used to respond to the high crime levels in the province.
“Through the Department of Community Safety and Liaison we have already set aside funds to promote sport against crime. We will go together with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to ensure that our youth are playing sport at ward level.”
Speaking on behalf of KZN Netball, Mrs Nurse Mathenjwa said the presence of the Premier shows the support he is showing for netball. She further emphasised the importance of working together as different stakeholders to achieve better results.
Captain of eThekwini B (Beach Blitz team) Nana Khomo said they are very excited to be playing in the tournament. “This will be a stage for all the ladies who are playing in this tournament to showcase their talent,” she said.
The KZN Premier’s Netball Cup will feature 12 teams with eThekwini Metro being represented by 2 teams, all the 11 districts will battle it out for the honour of being crowned champions. The tournament will be played in a round robin format with two groups of six each. The top teams from each group will advance to knock-out stages, leading to the Finals on Sunday,9th March.
